Leap Year
As another new, yet unpredictable, year begins, there are plenty of items that will be discussed due to some questions that 2012 will eventually reveal the answers to. Who wins the Super Bowl? Will we have a new President of the United States? However, one of the most interesting or entertaining issues (depending on your beliefs) is the Mayan calendar’s assertion that December 21st, 2012 will be the day the world ends.
There are plenty of theories to choose from to support this doomsday deadline. There’s the theory of galactic alignment, in which the planets and the sun all line up in the same flat plane creating gravitational factors between the sun and the black hole at the center of our galaxy (also known as Sagittarius A). This phenomenon will therefore cause some type of imbalance here on Earth. Mass extinction is a suggested outcome, which has been observed in the fossil record. Another theory suggests the Earth’s magnetic field is weakening which could cause the reversal of the Earth’s north and south poles. If NASA is asleep at the wheel (highly unlikely), there could be a planet/asteroid that is currently on a path to collide with Earth. Finally, you’re also free to believe this hype about 12/21/12 is a marketing ploy designed to sell books and promote movies.
As you can see, there are a handful of options that people believe in to support (or ignore) this movement. However, instead of casting our attention to that of the unknown, how about we focus on what we do know:
One certainty for 2012 is this is a “leap year.” Leap year signifies a year containing one additional day in order to keep the calendar year in sync with the seasonal year. By adding this additional day in the month of February every four years, it compensates for the fact that our typical ‘common year’ of 365 days is shorter than an actual ‘solar year’ by approximately 6 hours.
Leap year is a great example of adaptation. Scientists before our time couldn’t figure out why there was so much variance in the seasons. Leap year helped to maintain continuity and consistency. They recognized a problem and implemented a solution. The same can be said of you and your workout programs. Maybe you are someone that only comes to the club just to do your cardio. While cardio is a crucial part of working out, it is also advisable to implement a weight training program to coincide with it in order to maximize your results. On the other hand, maybe you are really disciplined when it comes to weight training/cardio but you struggle with the nutrition aspect. We can work with you to suggest meal plans that fit your budget and schedule. Identify, adapt and implement.
Just remember, there is no better judge than yourself and only you can seek out help if you recognize you need it. Don’t assume the world will be ending in December and let yourself go!
